Junior Easter Camp

We were delighted with our biggest Easter Camp yet, almost 60 children turned up each day for some high quality coaching from Triathlon Ireland’s Gary Crossan, Maria McCambridge and Athy Tri Club’s own Karen and Zuzana. Our coaches were ably assisted by a crack team of volunteers without whom the camp wouldn’t be possible. Special thanks to our coaches, volunteers, Seán Ó Mathúna (An Garda Síochána), Athy College, K-Leisure and Seanie B’s Coaches.

The camp ran from Monday, 15th April to Wednesday 17th. Monday started out wet and cold before getting wetter and colder but that’s part and parcel of outdoor sports so the show went on. Children were split into junior, middle and senior groups with each group getting a session of running, cycling and games before an earlier than planned lunch as the weather turned even worse then some indoor games followed by a bus to K-Leisure for some swim coaching with Zuzana.

Tuesday and Wednesday followed much the same lines with varied coaching sessions in the different disciplines but with significantly better weather. On Wednesday we added a fun Easter Egg Hunt and in the afternoon everyone took part in a triathlon with the different age groups doing different distances. This event is a highlight of the Easter Camp, bringing together all three disciplines along with transitions and giving children a chance to put their new skills and knowledge to great use.

We’re looking forward to next year’s camp already. Junior training will be back on Tuesday 30th April from 6:30 to 7:30 pm (new members are always welcome) and our Family Aquathon, now part of the Waterways Ireland Splash and Dash Series, will take place on July 14th. This is a free event but entrants should pre-register on the Triathlon Ireland website.
